Father Zakaria Botros: Threatened into Silence

The renowned Coptic Christian priest Father Zakaria Botros was to speak  in Vienna tonight, but the atmosphere created by Muslim threats was such the event had to be cancelled.

Below is the press release sent out by the Wiener Akademikerbund concerning this unfortunate turn of events. Many thanks to JLH for the translation:

Dear Friends!

Last week, with the greatest joy and in expectation of a courageous confrontation of the problems surrounding Islam, the promises of multiculturalism and diversity as well as the erosion of our value system, we invited you to a lecture/presentation with the Coptic scholar. Islam researcher and charismatic Christian missionary, Father Zakaria Botros.

After meticulous preparation and with Father Zakaria anticipating his first public appearance in Europe, it is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the event, which was scheduled for Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 7:00 PM.

For reasons of numerous Islamic threats of violence and intolerable pressure upon our oriental Christian friends, insistence upon holding the event would be not only risky, but absolutely irresponsible.

We are saddened to discover that — in an allegedly free country such as Austria, and despite precautions taken by the authorities in a serious and professional manner — it is no longer possible to pursue critical clarity and tell the truth.

Father Zakaria is surely the highest-ranking and most profound critic of Islam. He does not merely reveal the theological and philosophical errors of Islam. For years, he has generously and successfully spread the spiritual offer of the joyous message of Jesus Christ among his beloved Muslim brethren.

We were aware that rejection of the false path of the “interreligious equality mania” is presently not considered “politically correct.” However, we hoped that an honest debate about truth in all possible forms of expression would be possible without violence, even in a time of relativistic destruction in the Republic of Austria.

Despite the disappointment, Father Zakaria’s heart is in Austria. His and our efforts toward a lasting order which rest upon the bases of peace, brotherly love, rule of law and prosperity must not die.

We regret any inconvenience this cancellation may cause you, and apologize for it.

Attacked Swedish Cartoonist’s Website Hacked

Controversial Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks’ website was hacked today, one day after he was attacked by angry attendees of a lecture on free speech at Uppsala University, where he screened a film showing the Prophet Muhammad entering a gay bar.

“I will show you that I can hack your computer,” someone calling himself Al Qatari wrote today in a message that came up at Vilks’ website. “Stop talking about Muhammad.”

But Vilks, 53, remained defiant after escaping harm in an attempted attack on him Tuesday at the university about 40 miles north of Stockholm. Three people, all younger than 20, were arrested and then released, but they are still under investigation for their involvement in the incident, Swedish police said today.

“What you get is a mob deciding what can be discussed at the university,” Vilks told The Associated Press. “I’m ready to go up again. This must be carried through. You cannot allow it to be stopped.”

Vilks has been the target of death threats — including a $100,000 bounty put on his head by al-Qaida in Iraq in September 2007 — for his rough sketch of Muhammad as a dog was printed in a Swedish newspaper in 2007. Vilks’ drawing came after Muslim countries expressed anger over a series of Danish cartoons about Muhammad in 2006.

Swedish police said some of the roughly 250 people attending Tuesday’s lecture were unruly at the beginning of the event. But it was only after Vilks began screening a Dutch film that showed images of a black, naked Jesus and of Muhammad entering a gay bar that a crowd of about 25 people rushed at the cartoonist.

Both uniformed and plainclothes police officers stationed at the lecture got in between the crowd and Vilks, Solveig Oijeberg, a spokeswoman for the Uppsala police department, told AOL News today. “The people trying to attack Vilks did not succeed because the police got in the way,” she said.

Oijeberg said police used pepper spray to subdue the protesters. Vilks was whisked to a nearby room and then left the university to go home. All told, his lecture lasted less than 15 minutes, Oijeberg said.

All the people at the lecture had passed through a security checkpoint, established in part because of the threats against Vilks. In March, U.S. authorities charged Colleen LaRose, an American woman who called herself “Jihad Jane,” with terrorism in connection with an alleged plot to kill Vilks. Irish authorities rounded up seven others on suspicion of involvement in the plot. LaRose has pleaded not guilty.

Vilks told the AP that a man had rushed at him and head-butted him. He said his glasses were broken in the melee. “It was chaos,” Vilks said.

Vilks has long been outspoken. “No one actually loves telling the truth but someone has got to say it,” he once said.

Gangs of Muslims are roaming the streets with knives.  We have had a lot of feedback from supporters in Dudley, and all are saying the same things, the police are letting this happen.  Muslims are being allowed to walk around unchallenged with weapons.  Knives, bricks, you name it.  What is going on in this Country?  There are hundreds of police there, but none seem to be doing anything about them.  I will take this back if there are reports that hundreds of Muslims have been arrested for carrying weapons tomorrow, but i wont be holding my breath.

The above was from first hand reports, people who were in the area.  Police are reporting NO arrests so far.  EDL members are en route to the area, newspaper reports are suggesting that plans for the  Mosque to be scrapped today, but I  have never known decisions like that to be made on a bank holiday Monday, so will be taking that with a pinch of salt.  If it is true, then it seems that mass protests are the only means of communication our MP’s will listen to these days.

We ask ALL supporters if you truly support the EDL to mobilise to Dudley today.  These lads who are there need your support, and they deserve it too.

We have just been in contact with the lads on the roof, they are in good spirits and ready for the long haul.  The call to prayer is still going out.

Armed police have just stormed the roof and ended the protest on the roof.  You don’t get that at a fathers for justice demo eh.

Police admitted to supporters present that they had to impose a section 27 dispersal order as they simply did not have the resources to keep the Muslim gangs away.

PROTESTERS REMOVED FROM BUILDING IN DUDLEY TOWN CENTRE

West Midlands Police have been working hard with members of Dudley’s communities and our partners to bring a safe and peaceful conclusion to this roof top protest.

We have successfully removed two men from inside the disused factory. These men, who it is believed broke into the premises last night are currently helping police with their enquiries.

Chief Inspector Mattt Matt Markham said “We realise the disruption the events of the last 24 hours have had on the community and we will be retaining a visible presence in order to maintain levels of trust and confidence.
